The seniors who have yet to complete No. 4 of the 161 things to do before graduation are in luck, because Ivy League rival Harvard is coming to town tonight to play No. 9 Cornell in a two –– possibly three –– game series. With this season marking the 100th anniversary of their first meeting, the Cornell/Harvard hockey game has always been one of the most anticipated games of the year.

In some games, a normally empty sports cliché really rings true. After Friday’s 2-0 victory for the men’s hockey team, the old saying “a win’s a win” certainly came to mind. Despite being outshot, 32-16, Cornell prevailed over Quinnipiac on the back of a remarkable shutout performance by senior goalie Ben Scrivens.

On Saturday night at Lynah, Cornell’s two smallest players came up huge. Blake Gallagher, the Red’s 5-7 assistant captain, led the way with one goal and three assists, while Locke Jillson, a 5-9 sophomore winger, notched two goals and one assist to carry the Red (12-5-3, 9-2-2) to a 5-3 victory over Clarkson (5-18-3, 1-11-2).

The Cornell men’s hockey team (15-4-4, 10-3-3 ECAC) was less than a minute away from a four-point weekend and a sweep of the season series with preseason ECAC Hockey favorite Princeton(17-6-0, 11-5-0 ECAC), when everything fell apart. After being stymied by the Red defense for most of the game, the Tigers scored two quick goals in the last minute of the third period to stun the crowd at Lynah Rink and topple the home team, 2-1.

Though it has been three weeks since the men’s hockey team last tasted competition, the Red hasn’t forgotten how to win. It came down to the wire, however, in Sunday night’s Florida College Classic championship game in Estero, Fla.

Just like the last time Cornell faced conference foe Colgate, a November faceoff at Lynah Rink, the Red (8-1-3, 6-0-2 ECAC Hockey) played the Raiders (4-3-1, 1-2-1) to a 2-2 tie Sunday — coming from behind to bring the game to overtime.
