Prof. Gerard Aching, Romance studies, will be the Africana center's next director, according to an email sent Tuesday obtained by The Sun.

Two Cornell students in the College of Arts and Sciences were recently awarded prestigious scholarships for graduate study, according to a University press release.

Cornell’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa — an academic honor society that annually inducts students with GPAs in the top 10 percent of the senior class and the top three percent of the junior class –– initiated their new members at a ceremony Thursday.

Over the last year, five departments  added a total of six new minors, bringing the total number of minors offered by the College of Arts and Sciences to 42. The new minors, in classics, classical civilization, mathematics, history, physics and anthropology will provide more opportunities for students to expand their education, Peter Lepage, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences said.

Due in part to low enrollment numbers, the College of Arts and Sciences will cease to fund the Modern Greek program.

Recent declarations from two national Africana organizations may bolster the opposition to the proposed transfer of the Africana Studies and Research Center to the College of Arts and Sciences, announced by the administration Dec. 1.

Director of Africana Research and Studies Center Prof. Robert Harris Jr. rescinded his resignation Friday as he led a group of 80 to 100 students and faculty in a march on Day Hall in protest of Provost Kent Fuchs’s decision, announced Wednesday, to fold the Africana Center into the College of Arts and Sciences.

Prof. Robert L. Harris, Jr. resigned his post as director of the Africana Research and Studies Center in protest of the University’s announcement Wednesday that the Africana Center will be merged into the College of Arts and Sciences.
