Saturday night at The State Theatre, the Multicultural Greek Letter Council hosted the Greek Freak Step Show where participants stepped up, competing for the title of Greek Freak Champion ... and $1,000.

The evanescence of dance has always been part of its appeal: the jewel-like forms that vanish as soon as they crystallize, fleeting icons of the body’s own mortality, immaterial as the human relationships — whether sexy one-night stands or mythic loves — that dance depicts.

This past weekend’s spring dance concert featured student choreography to an unprecedented degree, sampling from a wide array of popular dance styles, many of which are more often seen on the street or in clubs than on the Schwartz Center’s main stage.

They hustled to “The Hustle.” They pushed it to “Push It.” They did what ever it is that people do to “Bad Romance.” In a flash mob dance yesterday afternoon in front of the Schwartz Center, the cast of Dance, Drama and the Disco of Desire promoted their show for passerbys in Collegetown. As one woman walking by summed up into her cell phone, “there are people dancing and they’re awesome!”
