Yesterday, the Multicultural Greek Letter Council held elections for the council’s executive vice president and vice president of finance. Although the MGLC had its first election of officers last Wednesday, yesterday’s election was meant to fill the council’s empty slates. President-elect Nicholas Diaz ’10 stated that the council “wanted to have the entire executive board elected before Thanksgiving break.”

My best friend was in a fraternity back at the University of Chicago, my alma mater, which is a much different institution when it comes “Greek” life. In fact, I had a pretty positive opinion of fraternities until I came to Cornell. I spent a lot of time at his fraternity house, although not really during parties. It was sort of the low-key “geek” fraternity — most, if not all, of the guys in that fraternity were pretty good dudes, and all of them were gentle folk in the sense that there wasn’t anyone who would ever pick a drunken fight or act aggressively towards drunk women. Most of the rough-and-tumble fraternities at the University of Chicago are related to sports teams, or at least they were when I was still there. So we did have a handful of fraternities that had a reputation for wild parties, dark, satanic hazing rituals, and epic sex stories. One thing in common with all of them, and you really get at this in your article, is the hierarchy that is associated with all aspects of life for people living in the fraternity.

What transpired that night in Collegetown was horrendous and absolutely inexcusable. As the executive vice president-elect of the IFC, I would like to apologize on behalf of the entire Greek community.

The Greek social scene is often the only part of Greek life in which non-Greeks participate. When the only place Panhellenic women are spotted is at fraternity parties it’s easy to see where stereotypes originate. Our social lives are only the tip of the iceberg; the unseen lives of sorority women include raising thousands of dollars for philanthropy, leading Girl Scout troops, tutoring elementary school children, studying with sisters in the library, editing campus publications, running huge student organizations and governing ourselves.

Executive board elections were held last night for the Interfraternity Council. Four executive positions were up for election, with each fraternity receiving a vote in each election.
Eddie Rooker ’10, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, ran unopposed for president. In a highly contested race, Allen Miller ’11, a member of Kappa Delta Rho, beat out five candidates for the position of executive vice president. In another highly contested race, four candidates ran for vice president for judicial, with Philip van der Made ’10, a member of Delta Chi, winning the election.
Eric Blair ’10, a member of Alpha Delta Phi, was elected vice president for recruitment out of two candidates.

For fraternities, rush has unofficially begun. From bar tabs to Thanksgiving dinners, guys are already getting excited for a week known by some as “the best week of freshman year.” Last week, the Interfraternity Council considered the possibility of mandating nights of dry rush — an action that could change rush week’s reputation.
