Julia Moser '15 laments about the perils of having a strange gap in her schedule

In honor of Black History Month, Olin, Uris and Mann Libraries are housing exhibits commemorating the past, and present, of the black community throughout February. The displays are part of a series of projects organized this year by students on the Black History Month committee.

Cornell Information Technologies will require Cornell affiliates to sign on with their NetIDs when using CIT-operated computers beginning in the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Cornell and Columbia University Libraries will begin implementing a collaboration agreement and sharing their Slavic and East European collections this school year. Under the announced plan, the two universities will expedite inter-library loaning and coordinate their acquisitions. The project is the first step toward greater partnership between the two libraries.       

Several University divisions took the first step in May in a three-year project to develop a book publishing model that will sustain academic research and publishing in an increasingly turbulent market.

In response to budget strain and the rising use of electronic resources, by June 2011 the Engineering library will have all of its print collections relocated into other University libraries. Its electronic collections, which represent 99 percent of the library’s materials used by students, will be enhanced to maximize their use for learning and research.

The University has turned a new page for several campus libraries: by 2012, all the print collections of the Hotel School and Johnson School libraries will be relocated to the ILR School’s library as part of the University’s larger strategic planning process.

As a former employee of Cornell University and as the former Assistant Director of the Knight Visual Resources Facility, I am writing to you to express my deep concerns over the recent decision by the College of Architecture, Art and Planning to shut down the Knight Visual Resources Facility.

I will attempt to write this column without sounding whiny, hostile or patronizing, but I can’t make any guarantees: It has become painfully obvious to me that our generation’s sense of social decorum is sorely lacking, particularly as it pertains to our behavior in the library, and that someone needs to address it.
