Seton Hall Too Much For M. Cagers in Home Opener

Cornell’s 21-game home win streak –– the fifth-longest among all Division 1 teams –– came to an abrupt end on Friday night, as the Red dropped a hard-fought contest to Seton Hall, 89-79, in its home opener. The Pirates, who were making their first-ever visit to Newman Arena, improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Red’s non-conference record now stands at 2-1.

All Hail the Pope

Sophomore forward Herb Pope provided Seton Hall with its first two points of the night following an early 8-0 deficit. Pope, a transfer from New Mexico State University, was ineligible to play games in 2008-09 due to NCAA transfer regulations, but was still allowed to practice with the team.

Seton Hall 89, Men's basketball 79

Despite senior Ryan Wittman's 24 points and Jeff Foote's three blocks, Seton Hall of the Big East was simply too much for Cornell to handle in Friday's home opener. The Pirates' Jeremy Hazell scored 33 points, 20 in the second half, and led his team to the 89-79 win.

The Red continues to show that skill and experience can overcome athletic disadvantages. On Wednesday, Cornell defeated UMass on the Minutemen’s home court. The Red (2-0, 0-0 Ivy) used superior execution and shooting ability in overcoming noticeable disadvantages in quickness and athleticism against its Atlantic 10 foe.
