Collegetown Bartenders

Gwyn Whieldon, grad, overheard a guy trick two girls into searching through his pubic hair for 10 minutes; Sean “Sully” Sullivan and Brad Weiss, M.M.H. ’03 stumbled upon a couple having sex in public, only a few feet away; and Gabe Dobbs ’10, learned how to concoct red-headed sluts and liquid cocaine by heart. This all may sound a little odd to some people, but for these brave souls, it’s all in a day’s work. That’s because Gwyn, Brad, Sully and Gabe are all Collegetown bartenders. In fact, they are just a few members of the revered coterie of expert mixologists who keep the wheels — and disco balls — of Cornell’s night life spinning. These dedicated individuals labor long and hard, working all hours of the night to keep the liquor flowing freely on the East Hill.

"Back Off, That's My Sister!"

Dear A,

I’m a junior in Arts and Sciences with a sister who is a senior in high school. She isn’t applying to Cornell early decision, but she is applying, and I think it’s where she wants to go. So as her wise and mature brother, should I be influencing her decision? And if she does show up in the fall, do I profess the benefits of office hours and the writing center? Or do I hold her feet up for her first keg stand?

Thanks,

“Cut it out, that’s my sister”

Dear Bro,

“Pre-Frosh.” “Prospective.” Don’t the words just make you want to hand out Keystone to little kids? A bit trickier when the little kid is your sibling.

Off the Hook (Up)

Female, Sophomore, 20, Arts & Sciences

Welcome to Cornell Diaries, where we print the anonymous recorded lives of Cornell students. Every week, a new anonymous diary will be printed. While The Sun maintains the confidentiality of each writer, all facts have been verified and all diaries record the true, unedited lives of different Cornell students.

Friday, October 31

8:30 p.m. Start drinking. Tell best friend I need to black out tonight.

9:08 p.m. Arrive at mixer. Immediately look for alcohol. Find it; continue to drink heavily.

9:32 p.m. Start getting somewhat belligerent and talking shit about everyone to the best friend.

Taken by the Tube

Want to know how you know you have no life? You have shows. Television shows. Shows that you must watch every week lest something crucial happen that has an enormous bearing on your existence. Lesbian fornication at Seattle Grace and Audrina’s big move are some such monumental events.

Vote. Or Else.

Armed soldiers in fatigues checked identification as women filed into a school to vote the last weekend of October. Such was the scene in Santiago as I accompanied my Chilean host mother to take part in nationwide municipal elections.

It was a whole different ballgame from its United States counterpart. In mid-September, campaign ads featuring candidates for alcalde (mayor) and consejal (municipal councilmember of sorts) started to pop up. Come mid-October, it was nearly impossible to look anywhere in the country and not see a political poster. In Santiago’s comuna of La Florida, forty-six candidates were on the ballot for the position of alcalde.

An American Election in China

“Obama jia you!” exclaims my Chinese teacher, using a signature Chinese phrase that translates to “Keep going Obama!” Over the past few months, she has been closely following the election and frequently asks our opinions during class. Though trying to remain non-partisan, she cannot help but reveal her penchant for Obama.

Operating Systems in Harmony

Ever since Apple switched to Intel processors in 2006, one of the main things Mac users have wanted to do is to run Microsoft Windows alongside Mac OS X. Although Mac OS is one of the main selling points of Apple’s whole computer lineup, there are just some things you need Windows for — many games, for instance, are still not released for the Mac at all.

A Few Old Favorites

As I thought about different drinks I wanted to feature in this column this week, I seemed to only have untimely thoughts. Halloween-themed or politically-inspired drinks have come and gone; Thanksgiving-inspired or end-of-semester celebratory drinks are too far in the future. And thus I came back to an old theme of mine, an issue I return to regularly: what goes into popular drinks that I hear people order at bars — some of which I have even tried? Jokes about drinking Sex on the Beaches are all too common around vacation time, but how many people even know what the main liquor in that drink is?

Sex on the Beach

1 oz vodka

1/2 oz peach schnapps

1 oz orange juice (can substitute pineapple

juice)

1 oz cranberry juice.

No More Screams for Ice Cream

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! However, here at Cornell it doesn’t seem like many people are screaming for ice cream any longer as frozen yogurt and other frozen desserts have become increasingly popular on campus. As more people try to avoid the infamous college weight gain, the beloved ice cream that we all hold near and dear is slowly being replaced.

The Cornell Dairy Bar, which offers a large variety of homemade ice cream, does not receive much attention among students. While everyone agrees that the ice cream itself is delectable, many have substituted the 15 grams of fat for non-fat or low-fat frozen yogurts like Wow Cow or Columbo from Jason’s Grocery & Deli or Tasti D-lite at Collegetown Candy and Nuts.

The People Who Make (Or Break) Our Weekends

On any given night, between the hours of midnight and 2 a.m. or so, there is a mysterious elevation in the noise level on upper College Ave. A quick glance out my window (or a quick listen) reveals the source of all the raucus: the Johnny O’s contingent. Whether they’re waiting to get in or just getting kicked out, there is always a scene to be seen outside of this bar.
