Happy Birthday Mr. President

Administrators, faculty members, students of the S.A. and members of the a cappella group The Class Notes stood in the second floor of the Cornell Store, waiting — waiting for something to happen, waiting for somebody to arrive.

Noon came. Noon went. Nothing. Nobody.

The anticipation was palpable.

12:05 p.m. Still nobody of note.

12:10 p.m. The door opens. Silence. All heads turn. Just a few students. Babble recommences.

The tension could be cut with a knife.

12:15 p.m. Chief of Police Kathy Zoner announces he is on his way. The cake is actually cut with a knife.

12:18 p.m. President David Skorton walks into the Cornell Store to a raucous rendition of happy birthday led by the The Class Notes with slightly off key accompaniment by faculty and administrators.

Skorton was clueless as to what was in store for him as he made his way from Day Hall over to the Cornell Store. While he thought he might have been venturing the couple hundred feet for his daily cookie, he had no idea a more tasty treat was in his future.

His attention was drawn to an old photograph of a mustachioed, younger Skorton projected on the Cornell Store screen over his head and to a signed poster-board adorned with faculty members birthday wishes. Skorton later made a few choice comments and knee slappers thanking every one for celebrating his 60th birthday. Apparently turning 60 has not had any detrimental effects on our president's wit.

The birthday wishers/ cake moochers enjoyed the chocolate and fig cake while the The Class Notes sang a song at the request of Dr. Robin Davisson, Skorton's wife, as well as an unprepared rendition of "Dancing in the Street."

While there was no shortage of cake, there was a conspicuous want of ice cream and refreshing milk ... perhaps budget cuts are at it again.
