When Greek recruitment comes to a close at the end of the week, what better way to celebrate the start of pledging than tuning into the season premier of Greek on ABC Family next Monday at 10 p.m.? Alright, alright –– I know you have pledge parties to run off to that night to get sloppy at, but the show is a guaranteed amusing pregamer! Especially for freshman new to Greek life, Greek is great at painting a surprisingly accurate and only slightly unrealistic picture of what you’re in for over the next four years.
As a huge fan of the show, I find that most episodes are eerily reflective of my day-to-day life here as a Greek member at Cornell. From crush parties to Greek Week to Panhel ranking wars, this is a must-see for the 30 percent of you Greeks on campus. Oh and added bonus: there are a handful of Cornell references in the show since alum Jessica O’Toole ’94 is a writer and co-producer.
But why do I care if you watch along with me next week? Well, there’s a chance the suits at ABC Family might put Greek on the chopping block if the ratings aren’t high enough this season.
At this point, I hope you’re thinking: “They’re going to keep that ridiculous show about teen pregnancy which couldn’t move at a slower pace unless a snail wrote it (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) and not hold on with dear life to the gleaming Greek gem?!” I too am embarrassed that Americans have been eating up the preggers shenanigans and slacking on their enjoyment of mocking college co-eds.
However, my TV viewing heart has already been broken twice when brilliant series I loved got the axe in their prime (re: Freaks and Geeks, Arrested Development), and I can’t stand to endure a third heartbreak. If you too happen to care about good programming staying on television, you should take an interweb trip to SaveGreek.com to become part of the fan uprising. Or if you have extra time on your hands, I’d highly recommend hitting up ABCFamily.com, watching the first few seasons online for free, falling in love with the characters, then scheduling the new season of Greek as your top priority next Monday. So lets go Cornellians: support our alums by watching TV!
