Arts Around Ithaca: Week of October 3

October 3, 2011

Guest Lecture: Bjarke Ingels Baker Auditorium Monday 5:15 p.m. Bjarke Ingels is a Danish architect and the founder of the award-winning firm BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group). BIG is known for its playful approach to design. It takes lessons from both the avant-garde and the corporate and predictable to develop a singular style that is fun and socially responsible,  daring and analytical. Ingels’ firm designed the Danish pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai expo, which, among other things, reintroduced the bicycle to a city suffering from veins swollen with traffic congestion. In addition to his architectural achievements, Ingels is known to be an engaging speaker, having given a prominent TED talk in Oxford in 2009. This lecture promises to be a fresh look at current architectural practice. — Jackie Krasnokutskaya

Castaways Lineup Previewing Tuesday, Ithaca College. A small town faces the harsh realities of war in Barbara Lebow’s play Plumfield, Iraq, staged this Thursday, October 6th, to the 15th at Ithaca College. The Iraq War is the backdrop in this work, which opens with President Bush’s infamous “Mission Accomplished” speech and studies the effects that the conflict wrecks upon a collection of youth and their quaint community. Two eager high school graduates enlist in the Army  and soon become witness to the darkest shades of human nature. In turn, they must reconcile their actions on the battlefield with the normalcy of everyday life. Director Cynthia Henderson interprets Lebow’s work with a talented cast as old as the characters they portray.  — Zachary Zahos
