The Sun Staff previews the events on campus and around town this week.
Contrapunkt! presents on Sunday at 3 pm at Barnes Hall:
Contrapunkt! is presenting a concert of new compositions inspired by student art. The art will be displayed at the concert.
Featuring a wide spectrum of compositions by Paul Hwang ’15, Alexander Hallenbeck ’13, Sophia Orzechowski ’12 and Liza Sobel ’12, Sun Staff Writer. Merging with the music are diverse inspirational art pieces by Jenny Dumler ’15, LaiYee Lori Ho ’12, Lindsay Levine ’15 and Undergraduate Artist of the Year winner, Roxanne Yamins ’12. The Contrapunkt! Art Experience appeals to all. Yamins’ art installation enhances Sobel’s composition and surrounds the large ensemble of performers, and Ho is creating a new video that relates to Hwang’s composition. The concert is funded by the Cornell Council for the Arts and the Student Assembly Finance Commission. The exposition is free and open to the public. — Sun Staff
Julliard String Quartet, 8 pm on Friday at Bailey Hall:
Featuring a new lead violinist, Joseph Lin, the Julliard Quartet — well-known for its beautifully structured melodies — is performing at Bailey Hall this Friday at 8 p.m. The quartet not only plays classics from artists like Beethoven and Debussy, but also showcases popular contemporary artists like Elliot Carter. This month, the classical music string quartet won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Art and Sciences for its contribution to classical music for over 50 years. Archie Fisher, 8 pm on Saturday at Hollis Cornell Auditorium, Goldwin Smith Hall:
Archie Fisher may not be a household name in the States, but across the pond Scots adore him as the soft-spoken titan in folk music. His bare acoustic guitar playing and warm, worn singing have earned him a place in the Scots Hall of Fame as well as the prestigious Order of the British Empire. His six decade-long career has brought joy and comfort to millions across the globe.

Blind Pilot, 9 pm on Saturday at The Haunt:
Indie folk á la Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes is hotter than ever, and Blind Pilot has ridden the wave of hype to ever-increasing fame. With appearances on Last Call with Carson Daly and the summer festival circuit, the Portland collective is a notable rising act for the new year. The group will provide some beautiful acoustic folk at The Haunt this Saturday. - Sun Staff
Eleanor Henderson reads from Ten Thousand Saints, 6 pm on Friday at Buffalo Street Books:
Eleanor Henderson’s debut novel — which The New York Times praises as one of the Best Fiction Books of 2011 — examines teenage life in the late 80s. Henderson, who is now an assistant professor at Ithaca College, will read excerpts from her work and sign at Buffalo Street Books.
