Olamide Williams ’10 told The Sun yesterday that he would be stepping down from his position as executive vice president of the Student Assembly. The decision is a result of a breach of S.A. charter, which mandates that the vice president should not miss more than three meetings consecutively, and that six missed meetings in total result in a removal from office. Williams said the missed meetings were a result of private matters. Nikhil Kumar ’11, vice president of internal operations, will be replacing Williams.
“We can, as many people in power do, look over these things,” Williams said of the policy. “But that’s not how I do things. I do it by procedure, and I do it by rules. … I have to take the steps any honorable person would do. Nothing will be hindered by this. I will still be working with the S.A.”
Williams will stay on the S.A. as an at-large representative.
“It’s unfortunate, but it’s understandable,” said Rammy Salem, president of the S.A.
Salem and Williams won the S.A.’s first direct election last spring for the presidency and vice presidency, respectively. The duo say they have made good on their promise to give the minority population a fair say in matters where they have oft been underrepresented.
One means of bringing about more minority student participation was a reinvigoration of the Joint Assembly of Multicultural Issues Committee, which had not met for seven years.
“What we did with JAMIC was, we took the S.A. out of its comfort zone. We looked at Asian-American communities, the African-American communities … we asked them to come under one committee and discourse,” Williams said.
“The response was absolutely tremendous,” Salem agreed.
Williams will officially announce his vacation of the vice presidency at tomorrow’s S.A. meeting.
Salem and Williams said they will continue to push a culturally inclusive agenda moving forward.
Williams is a heavily involved student, participating in the hurdles as a member of the men’s track and field team. He also serves as a vice president of the Multicultural Greek Letter Council.
