Following a year of changes to the Greek system that have garnered national attention, the three branches — the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Letter Council — elected their new leaders this week.

“I think it’s going to be a challenging, transitionary year for the Greek system, but I think it’s a challenge that we as a unified Greek community can meet with enthusiasm and tactfulness,” said Hollis Hanley ’13, the incoming president of the Panhellenic Council.

Chris Sanders ’13, incoming president of the IFC, emphasized his desire to be more strategic and proactive in his leadership this year.

“We really want to regain a seat at the bargaining table with the administration,” Sanders said. “We’ve seen our self-government be limited, and I think we definitely want to work on increasing our self-governance.”

Charles Winslow ’13 was elected president of the MGLC. He could not be reach for comment Wednesday.

To address some of this year’s changes, the IFC added a new position to its executive board, vice president of membership, which will be held in its inaugural year by Mickey Katz ’13.

Katz stressed the importance of addressing the new member education issues that have arisen following President Skorton’s call to end hazing in an Aug. 24 op-ed in The New York Times.

“We need to eliminate, and will not tolerate, anything dangerous going forward,” Katz said.

“I’m very optimistic. I think we are in a position where we can usher in a new era of the Greek system,” Sanders said.
