The women’s hockey team concludes its regular season at home this weekend with the possibility of making history. The Red (13-8-6, 12-2-6 ECAC), currently sitting tied with Clarkson (20-8-4, 14-4-2 ECAC) atop the ECAC standings, is looking to win the ECAC regular season title for the first time in history.
Depending on how the Golden Knights finish the weekend, RPI tomorrow night and Union on Saturday afternoon are all that stand in the Red’s way.
The Red picked up three points on the Golden Knights last weekend to move into a dead heat for the ECAC crown and therefore home ice throughout the ECAC playoffs. From an outside perspective, the pressure appears to be on the Golden Knights, whose title it would be to lose. After going 1-3-1 in their last five games, the Golden Knights need to right the ship before it is too late. Still, the Red is solely concerned with what it has the ability to control.
“I can’t really say how Clarkson is feeling,” said senior forward Melanie Jue. “All I know is that we’re taking it one game at a time and whatever happens, happens. We’re in a good position [to win ECAC] but we’re really just focusing on what we can control.”
Led by sophomore goaltender Amanda Mazzotta, who recently picked up her second consecutive ECAC goaltender of the week award, the Red has not been scored upon in its past four games. Cornell’s defense is something that has been a focus point throughout the season, and will ultimately decide how far the team advances in the coming weeks.
“We take a lot of pride in our defense,” Jue said. “We’re really aggressive, whether it’s battling hard in the corner and winning those one-on-one battles or blocking shots; I think that we do a very good job at eliminating our opponents’ chances.”

After starting off 0-7 against Ivy opponents, women’s basketball looks to continue its winning streak this weekend.
“We’ve taken the approach all year that if we take care of business in our own end first, the rest will fall into place,” added sophomore forward Chelsea Karpenko.
With the possibility of an ECAC crown looming, the Red is doing a good job at keeping focused on the task at hand and not getting ahead of itself.
“We’re really just focused on this weekend and taking it one game at a time,” Jue said. “Winning ECAC outright has been a goal of ours from the beginning of the season and would be a great accomplishment.”
In the event that the Red and Golden Knights finish the season tied in points, the Golden Knights would take home-ice advantage in the possible ECAC playoffs finals matchup between the two teams. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head competition, with each team winning once, and the second is total wins, which gives the nod to the Golden Knights.
“We’re just looking to come out of the weekend with four points,” Karpenko said. “But having the top spot to ourselves would be great. Hopefully we’ll do our part to accomplish that and Clarkson will do theirs.”
