Having an undefeated record in an all-time series with one team is pretty impressive; holding that distinction against two teams is even more legit; and hosting both of those teams in the same weekend definitely makes for an interesting couple of days.
The men’s tennis team will put this logic to the test when it takes on St. Bonaventure (12-0 all-time) and Stony Brook (2-0 all-time) at the Reis Tennis Center tomorrow afternoon.
Young stud: Freshman Sarah O’Neil and her freshmen teammates have carried much of the load this season for the Red. O’Neil helped the women’s team to two wins earlier in the week in Cornell’s 5-2 loss to Syracuse. - By: Tina ChouThe last time Cornell met up with St. Bonaventure, the Red shut out the Bonnies, 7-0, while its last match against Stony Brook ended in a 6-1 victory.
The Red enters this weekend on a one game win streak after defeating St. John’s, 6-1, last weekend at home. The men’s team will likely rely on juniors Jon Jaklitsch and Andy Gauthier – the team’s top singles players – to provide stability in this weekend’s matches.
The women’s squad returns to action only three days removed from its 5-2 loss to Syracuse, in which the Red won three of the nine matches it played.
Freshmen Christine Ordway and Sarah O’Neil earned the Red’s lone doubles victory, 8-5, while senior Susan Sullivan also contributed with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Syracuse’s Simone Kalhorn. O’Neil also won her singles match against Alessondra Parra when her opponent retired in the second set due to injury.
The Red will have a chance at redemption tomorrow when it takes on Stony Brook and St. Bonaventure at the Reis Tennis Center.
This young Cornell team has relied heavily upon the play of its freshmen, particularly Ordway, O’Neil and Kristin Lim, who took a loss at the hands of Emily Harman, 6-2, 6-3, in the Red’s match with Syracuse earlier in the week.
After this weekend’s match-up with Stony Brook and St. Bonaventure, the women’s team travels to Orlando, Fla. to compete against Stetson and Rollins, while the men’s squad travels out west to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on New Mexico State and host Utah.
